Some call it "the most wonderful time of the year", but for many it may be the most stressful and the most expensive. People are making sacrifices -- and it may include cutting back on annual gifts to charity., but some charity organizers are staying positive. Alma Randolph of the Alma Randolph Charitable Foundation says she hopes this year's Christmas concert at the Riverpark Center makes up for the drop in donations from the annual Share the Vision dinner.

Seems like only yesterday it was Friday, and now here we are just five days away from the official start of the holiday season. We asked our focus group what the first word was that came to mind when they heard "holiday season," The overwhelming response was "stress," often preceded by a selection of unprintable adjectives. Three homeless shelters in the Quad-Cities are facing financial hardship, with one likely not able to re-open Dec. 1 as it planned. Christian Care -- which operates a men's rescue mission at 2209 3rd Ave., Rock Island, and a domestic violence shelter for women and children -- laid off eight employees because of an operating deficit. It is left with nine staff members.  

North Carolina's state treasurer has unveiled rules banning employees from taking gifts from companies that do substantial business with the agency. Treasurer Janet Cowell also announced Friday her top-level staff can't solicit charitable donations of more than $150 from contractors doing more than $10,000 worth of business a year with her office. The rules come after former chief investment officer Patricia Gerrick said she was offered favors from investment firms but didn't accept them.  

On Saturday, Dec. 12, Loaves and Fishes will hold its ninth annual "Shop for Your Parents Day." Located at the Shriver Job Corps Center, 270 Jackson Road, Devens, the event includes a family breakfast, a visit from Santa, and shopping. The program provides an opportunity for children of Loaves and Fishes clients to select presents for parents or guardians at no cost. Seniors and adults living alone are also provided with a gift bag.
